THE MISSION BEHIND THE COSUMNES RIVER PBA

THE MISSION BEHIND THE COSUMNES RIVER PBA

At its core, the Cosumnes River Prescribed Burn Association is about people.

The mission is simple but powerful: bring community members together to use prescribed fire as a tool to reduce wildfire risk, restore ecosystem health, and build local resilience. But how that mission comes to life is what makes it truly unique.

The PBA is built on a “barn raising” model—an idea rooted in neighbors helping neighbors. Just as communities once came together to build barns, today they come together to put good fire on the ground. One landowner’s project becomes a shared effort, with volunteers, practitioners, and neighbors all contributing their time, skills, and support.

This approach does more than reduce fuels. It builds trust, strengthens relationships, and creates a sense of shared ownership over the land and its future.

Through this model, the PBA removes many of the barriers that individuals face when trying to implement prescribed fire alone. Members gain access to training, experienced leadership, equipment, and a network of people willing to help. In return, they show up to support others—creating a cycle of collaboration that grows stronger with every project.

The mission also extends beyond individual burns. It’s about building a culture of fire stewardship in Southern El Dorado County—where people understand fire, respect it, and know how to use it responsibly.

This isn’t a top-down program. It’s grassroots, community-driven, and action-oriented. Every burn, every training, and every volunteer effort contributes to a larger goal: a safer, healthier, and more fire-adapted landscape.

In a region shaped by fire, the path forward isn’t avoidance—it’s participation.

And through the Cosumnes River Prescribed Burn Association, that participation is bringing communities back together—one burn at a time.
